Behaviour Management changes for 2020

Dear Parents/Carers,

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all parents and carers a happy new year.  This term is a crucial for all students, none more so than the Year 11 students who enter the final leg of their GCSE studies.  It is vitally important that all students attend each and every day.  There is a clear link between attendance and achievement which is why we insist on good attendance.   If attendance drops below 95% this causes underachievement and this has proven extremely difficult for students, to ‘catch up’ on learning missed.

A reminder that the Year 11 ‘Revision Hub’ is open after school on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon from 2.45pm until 4.30pm and intervention classes are running each night except Fridays.  It is vital that students are now following a revision plan and are working each night, in small manageable chunks of time, to provide the best opportunities for themselves in the summer examinations.

As we return to school, there has been work completed over the Christmas break on a new and improved ‘Behaviour for Learning’ system.  This will see students graded for each lesson from a ‘1’ to a ‘5’ score.  This will enable students to receive instant feedback regarding in-class engagement, quality of work completed and classroom conduct.  Each classroom has a poster highlighting the system and this can be seen on the reverse of this letter for your information.  The system is a simple and effective way of ensuring consistency and high expectations, as we continually look to raise standards of behaviour at the Oaks Academy.  Every lesson is an opportunity to be ‘Outstanding’ or ‘Good’ but this is supported by a clear system of sanctions to address disruptive behaviour.

In addition to a new Behaviour for Learning system there have also been changes made to the whole Academy timetable to ‘iron out’ a few issues that existed in the Autumn term.  This will result in some students being placed into new teaching groups and some lessons moving to different days.  These changes will be shared with students on Monday 13th January during an extended form tutor session and new timetables will be handed out.  If you have any concerns around these changes, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards,

Mrs E Hooley
Headteacher
