 INTRODUCTION

Students will be challenged with questions about belief, values, meaning, purpose and truth, enabling them to develop their own attitudes towards religious issues.

WHAT TOPICS WILL I STUDY DURING THE COURSE?

The new AQA GCSE Religious Studies A specification covers a range of the major world religions, six contemporary ethical themes and two textual studies, ensuring that students have a diverse choice of intriguing subjects to explore.

WHAT SKILLS WILL I USE AND DEVELOP?

Courses based on this specification should encourage students to:

•  develop their knowledge and understanding of religions and non-religious beliefs

• develop their knowledge and understanding of religious beliefs, teachings and sources of wisdom and authority, including through their reading of key religious texts, other texts and scriptures of the religions they are studying

• develop their ability to construct well-argued, well-informed, balanced and structured written arguments, demonstrating their depth and breadth of understanding of the subject

• reflect on and develop their own values, belief, meaning, purpose, truth and their influence on human life

• reflect on and develop their own values, beliefs and attitudes in the light of what they have learnt and contribute to their preparation for adult life in a pluralistic society and global community.

WHAT EXAMINATIONS WILL I TAKE?

Pupils will have to sit two 1hour 45 minutes exams.

 

Component 1: Study of religions

• Students must answer questions on two specified religions: Christianity and Buddhism.

Component 2: Thematic studies

• Students must answer questions on four themes from religious, philosophical and ethical themes and textual themes: relationship and families, religion and life, religion peace and conflict and religion crime and punishment.

HOW WILL MY WORK BE ASSESSED?

When assessing we start at the lowest level of the mark scheme and use it as a ladder to see whether the answer meets the descriptor for that level. When assigning a level we look at the overall quality of the answer and do not look to pick holes in small and specific parts of the answer where the student has not performed quite as well as the rest. We have descriptors on how to allocate marks. We also mark SPaG, Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar.

HOW WILL THE COURSE HELP ME WITH MY FUTURE CAREER?

Students will also gain an appreciation of how religion, philosophy and ethics form the basis of our culture. They will develop analytical and critical thinking skills, the ability to work with abstract ideas, leadership and research skills. All these skills will help prepare them for further study.
