Geography KS3

 INTRODUCTION

The new Geography specification is based on a balanced framework of physical and human geography. Students will travel the world from their classroom, exploring case studies in the United Kingdom (UK), higher income countries (HICs), newly emerging economies (NEEs) and lower income countries (LICs).

WHAT TOPICS WILL I STUDY DURING THE COURSE?

In KS3, topics of study include climate change, poverty, deprivation, global shifts in economic power and the challenge of sustainable resource use. Students are also encouraged to understand their role in society, by considering different viewpoints, values and attitudes.

In KS4, the subject content is split into four units that will be taught across the 2 year course.

3.2 Challenges in the human environment

3.3 Geographical applications 

3.4 Geographical skills.

WHAT SKILLS WILL I USE AND DEVELOP?

·         Develop and extend knowledge of locations, places, environments and processes at a range of scales including global, national and local.

·         Gain understanding of the interactions between people and environments and how these change over space and time.

·         Develop a range of geographical skills including those used in fieldwork, in using maps and GIS and in researching secondary evidence.

·         Apply geographical knowledge and skills to real world contexts, including fieldwork and to contemporary issues.

WHAT EXAMINATIONS WILL I TAKE?

Students will sit 3 papers

Paper 1: Living with the physical environment – 1hr 30

Paper 2: Challenges in the human environment – 1hr 30

Paper 3: Geographical applications – 1hr15                          

HOW WILL MY WORK BE ASSESSED?

A01: Demonstrate knowledge of locations, places, processes, environments and different scales.

A02: Demonstrate geographical understanding of concepts and how they are used in relation to, and interrelationships between places, environments and processes.

A03: Apply knowledge and understanding to interpret, analyse and evaluate geographical information and issues to make judgements.

A04: Select, adapt and use a variety of skills and techniques to investigate questions and communicate findings.

HOW WILL THE COURSE HELP ME WITH MY FUTURE CAREER?

Students who complete the course will have the skills and experience to progress onto A-level and beyond.
