Design and Technology KS3

 INTRODUCTION
Our KS3 Design and Technology offer our pupils the opportunity to experience subjects ideally suited to learners with a preference for practical, rather than theoretical learning. This course will be taught in mixed ability groups.  The work will sometimes be differentiated to suit the strengths of individual candidates. Facilities are always available at lunch-time for students who need to complete a task, use a computer or need extra help.
WHAT TOPICS WILL I STUDY DURING THE COURSE?

Learners will carry out a number of bite-sized projects to demonstrate their competence in a number of core skills across three different disciplines; Food, Textiles and, Res. Mat.  This will include the transferable skill of teamwork and one of the mini projects should allow for this. Learners will produce a series of small made outcomes and record their work in a portfolio. Learners will study materials and their working properties and learn about processes and

manufacture. They will gain knowledge of the applications and characteristics of a wide range of materials and ingredients.

WHAT SKILLS WILL I USE AND DEVELOP?
Learners will develop skills in planning and development, making, testing, evaluation and communication. Learners will develop a wide range of theory based and practical making skills including using a wide variety of tools and equipment. Additionally learners will gain transferable skills such as communication and Teamwork.
WHAT EXAMINATIONS WILL I TAKE?
Students do not take exams during this time.
HOW WILL MY WORK BE ASSESSED?
Pupils will be assessed on an on-going basis. There are up to six Tracking Points (TPs) with two Assessment Points (APs) in between each TP. Assessment Points are based upon pupil progress in either a practical/skill based activity or a written submission. These are internally assessed. Homework will be set regularly and will be an essential part of the course. Regular dialogue and feedback will be given throughout the course, informing students of their current attainment and targets for improvement.
